Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Players are granted the ability to question certain calls from the chair umpire, following the practice currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
