The Former President's System of Punishment and Favor

Trump's intense appetite for revenge has quickly morphed into a methodical apparatus. During the year since his election, the president's fury and impulses have assumed the guise of administrative measures in a manner reminiscent to earlier dictatorial governments. Federal officials who do not cooperate are promptly fired and succeeded by supporters. Political officials who question him face indictment, court proceedings and punishment. Opponents have been categorized under presidential directives as “anti-American”, “anti-Christian” and “against free markets”, and menaced with prosecution as “security threats”.

The Justice System Transformed

Each instance involving prosecution of political opponents and leniency for supporters displays its own particular features. Yet, notwithstanding their particular character, they represent examples of what has developed as a deliberate approach. Those incidents are not coincidental. Trump's purge of Department of Justice attorneys and law enforcement personnel, coupled with his appointment of loyalists in key positions, began swiftly, quickly developed a consistency, and has now been molded into a structure. DoJ and the FBI have been remade into political bodies under Trump's direct command to implement his directives. Unfairness has been made routine. It represents the apparatus of revenge.

Administration is preoccupied with targeting the leader's alleged opponents than they are with protecting our public welfare.

Inside the Apparatus

The beginnings of this system has been exposed in the legal complaint of several previous senior Federal Bureau officials filed in the ninth month in the judicial system in DC against FBI director an administration figure and attorney general Pam Bondi for illegal termination in “a campaign of payback against the officials for what Defendants considered to be a refusal to demonstrate proper political loyalty”. According to the filing that one official, the ex- temporary head, recounts a discussion in which he “openly admitted the illegality of his conduct”.

The official had attempted to defend law enforcement officers from being dismissed, the complaint alleges. The director advised him that “administration officials” – perceived by him to be the presidential administration and justice department – had ordered him to fire everyone who they determined as having been involved in a law enforcement case against him. The filing continues: “He clarified that he had to terminate the people his leaders told him to remove, because his capacity to keep his own position depended on the dismissal of the agents who worked on investigations involving the leader. He explained that there was no option he or him could do to stop these or any other firings, because ‘the agency sought to incarcerate the President in prison and he remembers.’” After Driscoll told him he was breaking the bureau's own regulations, Patel allegedly said “he knew that and he was aware the nature of the immediate dismissals were almost certainly illegal”.

Extensive Impact

Since the director's alleged admission to him, the DoJ and the Federal Bureau have been weakened and redirected for his retribution system. Six of the bureau's high-ranking agents were fired or forced out in the initial period of the administration. About 4,500 legal professionals at the justice department have agreed to a “early exit scheme”. No fewer than multiple federal prosecutors, including those in the New York office, resigned in dissent over what they viewed as partisan influence in withdrawing the legal action against the city leader, the mayor, in exchange for his collaboration with his Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests of immigrants. The ethics division of the department, which manages corruption cases, has been reduced to minimal staff. The rights protection unit has been devastated: seventy percent of its employees has resigned. One-third of executives at the department have resigned. The division enforcing environmental law has experienced the exit of a majority its leadership.

Incentives and Penalties

Concerning the mayor's situation, the interim prosecutor for the NY office, the official, resigned in protest against what she labeled as the “trade-off”. A key figure, his “immigration leader,” was present as the agent with him on a media outlet to announce: “Should he fail to deliver, I will return in the city.”. Meanwhile, another figure, earlier the senior DoJ official and a past legal representative, who arranged the deal, was granted an court role, a potential stepping stone to the highest court.

Trump's immunity for crimes carried out while in government, awarded by the remarkable judgment of the GOP-led on the highest court, thus preventing his legal action over the January 6 insurrection and maintaining his political viability for the national vote, is the foundation stone on which he depends to shield his stalwarts. Given this protection, he has been empowered to permit corruption. The impact of the supreme court decision infuses his administration and the political party completely. The legal case has spread.
