RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of approach shafts down to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey said. "Including them were thousands of UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

During December, the US military conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
