Early Saturday morning, reports emerged of significant explosions shaking Tehran, following claims from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preemptive strike.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, columns of dense smoke were seen rising over the centre and east of the city.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet reported, though it did not immediately provide further details.
Context: Escalating Tensions and Prior Events
The incident takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated strains in the region. Key events leading up to this attack involve:
- US Military Buildup: A significant buildup of American warships in the region, featuring the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest discussions between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with indications of more talks planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the strike, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or face severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. They dismissed assertions about missile development and protest deaths as unfounded.
The situation is fast-moving, with further updates anticipated as events unfold.
